Fairmont Mother’s Day Run

Charity Brighouse Vancouver’s team of 17 volunteers attended the Fairmont Mother’s Day Run on May 8th as early as 7am to act as race marshals. The volunteers, which additionally consisted of members of the board and staff, continued to cheer on the runners until 11am when the race ended, completing a total of 3 hours and 30 minutes of volunteer work. As race marshals, they were required to sport a Fairmont Mother’s Day shirt to support the run while cheering on and providing support for the runners, both verbally and physically. The volunteers were split up in groups throughout the track. Some acted as medical aid assistants, some gave out water bottles, and some delivered words of encouragement. The run was a success and as a team, Charity Brighouse received an honorarium which we used to further develop our plans for future events.

Krispy Kreme

On April 9th and 10th, Charity Brighouse Vancouver branch’s first Krispy Kreme sale, a team of 10-20 volunteers, along with staff and board members set up tables, chairs, handmade signs, and posters while also arranging the Krispy Kreme donuts in Kerrisdale. The volunteers promoted the sale by walking around the block holding signs and displaying flyers to support the event or donated cause. To further advocate for the ISS and to accelerate sales, some volunteers were grouped to sell by walking around the neighbourhood and knocking on doors. Since Charity Brighouse was working with ISS to raise as much money as possible to help support the Syrian refugees, the Krispy Kreme donuts were sold at a rate of $15 per box (a dozen donuts), or $2 per donut. The Krispy Kreme sale was a way for volunteers to practice their communication skills while promoting a good cause. All proceeds of the Krispy Kreme sale went towards the Immigrant Service Society of Canada (ISS), to help refugees settle in Canada. Charity Brighouse has currently donated $1000 to the ISS.

Bottle Drive

The Charity Brighouse Bottle Drive was a two week-long event. During the first week, volunteers handed out pamphlets and knocked on doors notifying the residents about the collection of bottles during the next week. We left the residents with our contact info, in case any questions or concerns came up. For the second week, the volunteers were divided into groups of three as they walked their designated routes, and gathered bottles that the residents had placed on their front yard for collection. The volunteers contributed four hours of their time to help support the event. The Bottle Drive was an excellent opportunity for volunteers to cooperate together as a team while improving their leadership and teamwork. Despite unfortunate weather conditions, our volunteers worked extremely hard to continue with the event. We finished with over 600+ bottles and raised up to 300 dollars. The bottles were then sorted the following week, and recycled at the local Return It store. All of the proceeds from the bottles were given to the UNHCR and Free the Children.

Clothing Drive

The Charity Brighouse Clothing Drive was a two week-long event. During the first week, volunteers handed out pamphlets and knocked on doors notifying the residents about the collection of clothing during the next week. The volunteer exercised their communication skills when talking to the residents about the details of this event and how they can contribute. We left the residents with our contact info, in case any questions or concerns came up. For the second week, the volunteers were divided into 4 groups as they walked their designated routes, and gathered clothes the residents had placed on their front yard for collection. The volunteers contributed 6 hours of their time to help support the event. The Clothing Drive was an excellent opportunity for volunteers to work together as a team while improving their leadership and teamwork. It was also a great chance to meet new people and interact while helping out the community. We finished with over 25+ bags of clothing and raised up to 250 dollars. All items donated were given to the Big Brothers Foundation.

Menchie's Sale

At our first Menchies sale, a team of 10-20 volunteers, along with staff and board members, set up tables, chairs, and decorations, while also arranging the various flavours of Menchie's frozen yogurt, at a previously decided location. The volunteers hang up banners and posters to support the event. For this event Charity Brighouse had collaborated with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. In order to raise more money to feed the community we sold the menchie's at $6 for one cup or $10 for 2. This sale was a great way for our volunteers to interact with their community and practice their communication skills while supporting a good cause. All proceeds of the Menchie's sale went towards the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Social

On June 25, 2016, the members of Charity Brighouse gathered together in Richmond for lunch to talk about everything the organization has gone through up to that point, and to talk about future plans. We had delicious food and titillating conversations as we discussed future staff members, interesting event ideas and casual conversation. Afterwards, most of the members went to play EXIT, a real time room escape game where participants have to discover clues, solve puzzles, and work together to escape an elaborately construed room. The game offered lots of teamwork opportunities that helped bring the staff together and allowed for collaboration outside of Charity Brighouse. At the end of it all, the staff were content and appreciated the time taken off from Charity Brighouse to have a good time.

ISS Cheque

The ISS Cheque delivery on May 2, 2016 was an enriching event for the Charity Brighouse Marketing team. A check of one thousand dollars was donated to the Immigrant Service Society of BC, raised from a previous Krispy Kreme Sale, which would go towards helping new immigrants in British Columbia settle in by providing important necessities like food, clothing, shelter and education. It was amazing being able to work with ISS since they taught Charity Brighouse a lot about the issues that new immigrants face and how any bit of support allows for  better transition. ISS was an amazing organization to work with and one that we look forward to supporting in the future.

Food Drive

The Charity Brighouse Food Drive was a two week-long event. During the first week, volunteers handed out pamphlets and knocked on doors notifying local residents and neighbourhoods about the collection of nonperishable foods during the next week. We provided residents with our contact info, in case any questions or concerns came up. A week after on August 20th, our 15 volunteers were divided into groups as they walked their designated routes, and gathered bottles that the residents had placed on their front yard for collection. The volunteers dedicated six hours of their time to help support the event. The Food Drive was an excellent opportunity for volunteers to cooperate together as a team while improving their leadership and teamwork. As a result Charity Brighouse was able to collect 50+ number of cans and other donations, and all proceeds were given to The Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Food Bank

On September 10th, Charity Brighouse, along with a team of 20 volunteers, gathered at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. The volunteers contributed 2 hours of their time to help out in various tasks, such as organizing canned foods, cleaning, and sorting boxes. All the food collected and sorted at the GVFB would contribute to feeding thousands of individuals in our community. This event was was a great opportunity for youth to further improve their teamwork skills, as well as broaden their experience in hands-on volunteering.

Voice of Passion

The Voice of Passion Concert on Sept 17 was an amazing event for Charity Brighouse to work with. Kevin Li put on a concert to help raise money for Canucks Place for children with cancer and was able to raise close to four thousand dollars! Charity Brighouse helped out at the concert by ushering people, bringing flowers and setting up. The volunteers were also able to talk to sponsors and with Kevin himself as well as listen to the concert for free. All in all, the concert was great and the chance to help out was one that each volunteer enjoyed.
